About Oak Ridge
The City of Oak Ridge is located in the eastern part of Tennessee, approximately 22 miles northwest of Knoxville.
Oak Ridge was built under a cloak of secrecy by the US government during WWII and is currently home to US Department of Energy facilities.
Oak Ridge, "the Atomic City", was built as part of the Manhattan Project.
At one time there were 3 nuclear weapons plants in the area, one of which you can do a partial tour of.
You can also visit the Friendship Bell, a gift from Japan representing peace and unity between our countries. It is in nearby Bissell Park.
In the area is also the infamous Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. It once housed James Earl Ray, convicted killer of Martin Luther King, among many other hardened criminals. Brushy used to be a maximum security prison and was known to the inmates as "the end of the line". The prison closed in 2009 and is open for tours. The Warden's Table, an onsite restaurant, has great food.
